Beat Dry Hair the Natural Way
Coconut oil is cheap and versatile and a favourite beauty product with those who like to keep things natural. In the UK you can get a 100 gram pot for a pound (about two US dollars) at Superdrug or Boots and it lasts for ages. Make sure it's just 100% coconut oil — it will be solid and white. It doesn't really smell of coconut, which means you can add your favourite fragrance if you so wish. Coconut oil is great for dry scalp and hair — leave it in all night and rinse in the morning for soft, shiny hair. You can also melt a small amount between your hands and use it as a moisturiser for face, body and hands. Make your own curly hair leave in/frizz reducer spray using coconut oil. Mix two tablespoons of cheap coconut hair conditioner, a tablespoon of aloe vera gel, a tablespoon of coconut oil, a tablespoon of jojoba (or similar) oil, two teaspoons of salt and a 1/4 teaspoon of honey. Add one cup of hot water and shake it all up in a spray bottle. You can also put a few drops of coconut fragrance oil (get good pure stuff from the Body Shop) into it so it smells really heavenly. You don't need to use much (to avoid the greasies!). This makes two 150ml spray bottles full; it keeps quite well but you might want to make less the first couple of times so you can experiment with the quantities to get the effect you want. For hair and scalp treatments I also love Monoi oil — Tahitian women use it as a moisturiser and hair oil. You can get it in the Body Shop or health shops. I have some that's pre-mixed with coconut oil which makes it even more wonderful. The oil is based on gardenia; it can be a touch expensive, but it's worth it ̄— and what a glorious smell! Sodium lauryl sulfate is the main culprit for drying out hair. They even put it in baby shampoo, although it's a harsh detergent that just strips the hair and scalp. Try to use 'normal' shampoos only a couple of times a week when you need to get rid of residues from things like serums. It's hard to get a non-SLS shampoo that works properly over any length of time, even when you use 'unsticky' hair products, but try Burt's Bees for one of the best. |
